Blog 25: Mentorship

Literal:

Contact info on the log.

Interpretive:

The most important thing that I gained from this experience would have to be knowledge of preproduction and set. Before this senor project, I had no real clue what really went on behind-the-scenes of a play. I never knew all the work that was put in to create even the simplest of sets, and the huge amount of people it takes to work together to make sure everything works out at the end and comes out how it was supposed to.

Applied:

When I was doing this mentorship, I spent most of it working with the set. I got to see the process of creating a set, and what were different things that we had to take into consideration when building the set. The set that we created was completely different from what the original play script for "Back to the 80s" described. Instead of having to create just one set for all the scenes, we created various sets for different scenes. We had to use different techniques and work with what we knew about the play to create a new set diffrent from what the script described. My essential question is "What is the best way a set designer can enhance a play?", and us as the set designer had to build a set that best fit the play, keeping the story true to the original.

Blog 11: Mentorship 10 Hours Check

1.   Where are you doing your mentorship?
I was doing my mentorship at Ontario High School with their school's theater.

2.   Who is your contact?
Mr. Jeremy Hansen (Ontario High School's Theatre teacher)

3.   How many total hours have you done (total hours should be reflected in your mentorship log located on the right hand side of your blog like your WB)?
While doing my mentorship at Ontario High School's Theatre I was able to complete a total of 174 hours and 30 minutes.

4.   Summarize the 10 hours of service you did.
Basically my 10 hours of service were spent on helping with the pre-production of Ontario High School's musical production, "Back to the 80s".  Most of the time I was on stage left working on building different sets and props that were needed for the production. I also did some painting and helping make sure that everything was organized in the scene shop. I would also do other things that Mr. Hansen needed done for the play. Things like helping find furniture or costumes.

5.   Email your house teacher the name of your contact and their phone number.

Blog 1: Summer Mentorship Component

Contact: Mr. Hansen (8/13/2012-10/20/2012)
  •          Ontario High School Drama / Tech Teacher
  •            Contact Phone and email on Mentorship Log at the Bottom
(In process of finding a new mentor that schedule fits better with mine)

Literal (know):

Literal (Need to know):
  • Are there any R.O.P classes for Theater Tech?
  • How many hours do people who do this as a career do?
  • What colleges offer a course on Theater Tech?
  • Does Theater Tech differ from the tech people that do movies?

Interpretive:
  • The most important thing that I gained from this experience is knowledge of what it really takes to be in Theater Tech. I never really thought that it takes so much time and physical work to be a Theater Techie. I also learned a lot about techniques for building things that I didn’t know about and how those tips can make building so much easier.

Applied:
  • This summer service learning helped me pick a topic because it showed me whether or not I really liked the topic of my choice. After completing the hours, I noticed that Theater Tech is something I look forward too, and that I really don’t feel the hours that I am working because I’m enjoying what I am doing.
